Glasses and Facemasks: Tips to Fight the Fog

Glasses and Facemasks: Tips to Fight the Fog

The pandemic has affected us all, in big and small ways. One challenge: following important mask rules and still being able to see!

NEWS YOU CAN USE | COVID-19

Why does this happen?

The simple science: when the warm breath escapes through the top of your mask and hits the colder surface of your lenses, condensation forms and can obscure your vision, which is both dangerous and annoying.

A good fit & seal

  • First, you want a good quality pair of glasses, that fit your face correctly (see our blog: How to Find the Best Frame for Your Face)
  • Second, you want a mask that fits securely over the nose, preferably one with a nose bridge that will keep warm air from exiting up towards your eyes.

3 effective hacks

1. POSITIONING

Find the type of breathable cotton mask you can pull up higher on your nose and use the bridge of your glasses to seal and conform your mask to your face. A tight fit will keep the warm air from escaping through the top of the mask.

2. WASH YOUR LENSES

Warning: If you have anti-reflective or other specialized coatings on your lenses, check with your optician before applying any substance to avoid ruining them.

  • Soap and water: simply wash your lenses with soapy water and shake off the excess liquid. Allow to air dry or gently wipe them off with a soft, non-linty microfiber cloth. The soap leaves behind a thin film that acts as a fog barrier.
  • Baby shampoo is a favorite among swimmers who struggle with foggy goggles. Use baby shampoo like you would soap. You can even leave a thin layer of soap on your lenses overnight for a more effective result.
  • Shaving cream containing glycerin adds a protective layer to both bathroom mirrors and glasses. Add a bit to both side of your lenses, wash off with water and air dry.
  • Anti-fogging spray or wipes: if all else fails, there’s always anti-fog sprays and wipes on the market that do the job too. This is the best option for anyone with a special coating on their glasses. For prolonged wear, we especially like Optix Anti-Fog Spray. Use as directed.

3. TAPE DOWN YOUR MASK

Especially if function is more important to you than fashion, you can tape your mask down around the bridge of your nose and to your cheeks with sports or medical tape. If you have sensitive skin, test the tape out beforehand to make sure that it doesn’t cause irritation. Or simply use your favorite Band-Aid—they’re safe for skin and easy to apply over the top of the mask. Think of this as nerdy chic!
